HOW PERIMENOPAUSE AFFECTS YOUR EYES
Perimenopause is the transition period that occurs before menopause and lasts several years. The change can be gradual or sudden. Menopause, on the other hand, is the final stage of a woman’s reproductive life and is diagnosed after a woman has gone 12 months without a menstrual period.
Watch our video with Professor Dawn Sim, Scientific Co-founder at MTHK and a surgeon at Moorfields, to discuss the effects of perimenopause on your eyes.

How Menopause Affects your Eyes
Menopause is the final stage in a woman’s reproductive life and is diagnosed after a woman has gone 12 months without a menstrual period. At this time, the ovaries will have stopped producing eggs, and oestrogen continues to decline.
Oestrogen is the primary sex hormone in women and helps maintain ocular health. It influences the production and quality of tears, the cornea's thickness, and the retina's health. During perimenopause and menopause, a decline in oestrogen levels can lead to several eye-related issues:
- Dry Eyes - Day and Night
- Cataracts and Glaucoma
- Issues with Contact Lenses
- Blepharitis and Age-Related Macular Degeneration
- Itchy and Watery Eyes
- Sensitivity to Light and Flashing Lights/Blind Spots
- Blurry Vision and Difficulty with Night Vision
- Greater Incidence of Eye Infections

Did you know we have oestrogen receptors in our eyes? During perimenopause and menopause, oestrogen decline affects our eyes, causing them to feel dry, itchy, and start watering.
And testosterone has a protective effect - that’s why more women than men are affected.
